What do the classes involve?

As children like the reassurance of routine, we follow the same structure each week and as they get older, the children are challenged to be more independent and use greater levels of skill when doing the activities. Classes are usually a maximum of 15 children, thereby making them more personal and comfortable. Each week we have a theme, for the younger age groups they are loosely linked, for the older ones we talk about the theme and incorporate more relevant songs as well as using our imagination. For the 1-5 year olds we encourage them to join in a show and tell session which boosts their confidence as well as creating a link to our weekly theme.

We play 2 different types of percussion instruments at each class and may use streamers, wings and beanbags as props. We also do songs with a parachute and all age groups love our bubble machine!

For the younger children music and movement are some of the best ways of promoting early language and co-ordination development whilst older children have an introduction to musical notes, pitch, rhythm and musical appreciation.

Obviously not every child will be able to concentrate for the full 45 minutes of the class and we wouldn't expect them to. The programs are carefully planned and are fast moving but some children may well go for a little wander and this is fine. All we would ask is that you bring them back into the circle for the next song so that eventually they learn what is expected of them. In the 2-5 year classes we aim to provide a more structured learning environment and the children are actively encouraged to focus on that week's theme.

Age Guideline

Baby classes (6 - 12 months):
It is never too soon to introduce your child to music and what's even better is that you get to join in too.
You are very involved in all the activities with your child in a relaxed pace, with lots of bouncing and lap songs, which are great for Mother and child bonding. Babies quickly progress from passive enjoyment of the class to being actively involved, clapping, cooing and wriggling to the music. So why not come along with your newly made post - natal friends.

1 - 2 years: In this group, the children still need lots of help from Mum/carer and they need to be encouraged and see your enthusiasm to get the most out of classes. They are introduced to a bigger selection of instruments than the babies and will gradually become more adept with them. We also have circle songs, fun songs where mum can 'whoosh' their child and we do some stopping and starting with the music - good for listening skills. We also have a bit of a bop and sing old favourites and nursery rhymes like Ring O' Roses. Programs still include lap songs and time with adults in order to continue one to one contact with their parent.

2 - 3 years: In this age group we are to teach the children not only more musical skills but also social and language skills all of which they will be encountering at nursery or playgroup. There are more action and movement songs to help encourage development of physical and fine motor skills. The children learn to listen, watch and respond. Parents are still encouraged to actively join in and support their child. With the we aim for the children to be able to play them without too much help, we often practice playing softly/loudly/fast/slow and the children become quite adept at playing and stopping at the right times.

3 - 5 years: This age group is similar to the 2 - 3’s but are encouraged to be more independent from their parents/carers. They are ready for more complicated actions and sequences. We have a short section in this class where we look at different aspects of music and basic music theory. For example, notation, rhythm, pitch, dynamics and classical music. 'Homework' (colouring sheets) are used which tie in with the theory. These classes provide an excellent foundation for children preparing for nursery or primary school.
